Managing Seasonal Allergies

Breathe easier this season with support from Cannon Pharmacy

As winter fades and spring arrives, many people look forward to longer days, warmer weather, and more time outside. But if you deal with seasonal allergies, spring can also mean sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. At Cannon Pharmacy, we’re here to help you manage seasonal allergies so you can enjoy the season with confidence.

What causes spring allergies?

Seasonal allergies (often called hayfever or allergic rhinitis) happen when your immune system reacts to allergens in the air. In spring, common triggers include:

  • Tree pollen: Often highest in early spring (varies by region and tree type)
  • Grass pollen: Typically rises in mid to late spring
  • Weed pollen: Often increases later in spring and into summer

These allergens can cause sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, post-nasal drip, and fatigue. Unlike a cold or the flu, seasonal allergies usually don’t cause a fever.

How to reduce allergy symptoms

1) Know your triggers

Tracking your symptoms can help you spot patterns. Note:

  • What you were doing (outside, mowing, hiking, cleaning)
  • Where you were (park, home, work)
  • The time of day symptoms flare up

2) Limit pollen exposure

At home

  • Keep windows closed on high pollen days
  • Run the AC if you have it, and change filters regularly
  • Consider a HEPA air purifier in the bedroom
  • Vacuum frequently (a HEPA vacuum helps)

When you’re outside

  • Check local pollen levels and plan activities accordingly
  • Pollen is often higher in the morning and on windy days
  • Wear sunglasses to reduce eye irritation
  • Shower and change clothes when you get home to remove pollen

3) Keep your living space allergy-friendly

  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water
  • Use allergen-proof pillow and mattress covers
  • Wipe down surfaces to reduce dust and pet dander
  • If humidity is an issue, use a dehumidifier to help prevent mold

4) Avoid common irritants

Even when pollen is the main trigger, irritants can make symptoms worse:

  • Smoke or vaping
  • Strong fragrances (perfume, candles)
  • Harsh cleaning products

Treatment options

Many allergy symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter options. The best choice depends on your symptoms and how often they show up.

  • Antihistamines: Help with sneezing, itching, and runny nose
  • Nasal steroid sprays: Often the most effective option for ongoing congestion and inflammation
  • Decongestants: Can provide short-term relief for a stuffy nose (not for everyone)
  • Allergy eye drops: Help soothe itchy, watery eyes
  • Saline spray or rinse: Helps clear pollen and relieve dryness
